But what game is our team we playing? What does it take to win? And how do we play it over time? At Markel Group, we’re playing an infinite game, where we seek to compound capital, in all its forms: from shareholder capital to our character.

It’s not easy to play infinite games—to relentlessly compound capital over the course of decades. Even when we know long-term, collective efforts produce the most enduring and rewarding outcomes, human nature can pull us toward short-termism, polarization, and isolation.  

That’s why staying the course in the face of those pressures requires something more. We believe teamwork is that extra something.

But what then is the “spirit” of teamwork?

It’s that feeling in the locker room before a big game, the hug from a teammate after a tough loss, and the strength one feels when all eight oars row in perfect unison. It’s the revelation that meaning only comes in relation to others.  

This year at Reunion, we seek to honor that spirit and its role in our forever footrace.
