Tom’s Bookshelf: an annual Reunion Tradition

Discovering Stories Together: The Tradition of Tom’s Bookshelf

Every great story deserves to be shared. At the Markel Group Reunion, stories come alive not only through conversations, but also through the carefully curated selections of Tom’s Bookshelf—a tradition that embodies our shared curiosity, love of learning, and dedication to growth.

What Is Tom’s Bookshelf?

Each year, we invite a select group of Markel Group Associates to recommend a book that speaks to Markel's spirit. These books inspire, challenge, and resonate with the values we hold dear. The goal? To spark discovery and connection and introduce our guests to new ideas and fresh perspectives.

Here’s how it works:

  • A group of selected Markel Group Associates suggest a current book (ideally published within the last five years) that is likely to be unfamiliar to our guests.

  • Each associate writes an excerpt explaining why they chose their book.

Thanks to the University of Richmond Bookstore, the result is a collection of thought-provoking titles, which are available for purchase at the Reunion.

Tom Gayner’s Picks: A Highlight of the Year

Of course, our bookshelf would not be complete without the contributions of Tom Gayner, CEO of Markel Group. A voracious reader and thinker, Tom selects 1-3 standout books each year that have moved, challenged, or changed how he views the world. His picks are a highlight for many guests.

A Tradition of Friendly Competition

Tom’s Bookshelf also fosters camaraderie and fun. The associate whose book sells the most copies at the Reunion wins a gift certificate to an independent bookstore in their hometown—a small way of supporting local communities while celebrating the power of ideas. The winner also wins our annual “Book Worm” trophy!

Last year’s winner, Henry Gardener, Senior Managing Director of Legal at Markel International, chose Will and Ariel Durant’s The Lessons of History. The book was such a hit that every copy sold out during the event!
